Government museum complex is the building established in the year 1857. It has the best collection of South Indian bronzes in the entire nation. It also contains ancient as well as modern arts. Among all these bronze icons of Nataraja, Rama, Sita, Lakshmana andHanuman are most beautiful.
This museum has geology and anthropology sections separately and sculptures were unearthed from the Buddhist ruins at Amaravathi. It is located on the Pantheon Road and situated in between Egmore station and Anna Salai. The British Society living in this city used to meet in the Pantheon.
It is very old building and may be from 18th century and also have a connemara Library at the ground section. This library is also from three National Libraries over the country. The National Art Gallery is very beautiful place to visit as a Jaipur-Mughal architecture.
The Government Museum have a fabulous collection of bronzes and the Museum Theatre, it is a quaint theatre out of the gaslight era. The main building is archaeological section, represents the major South Indian periods including Chola, Vijayanagara, Hoysala and Chalukya.
