Fort St. George is the fort grew in a metropolis and the building of the nucleus of the fortwas very first and it is since year 1640. It was the beginning of the foundation of Chennai as an Empire. It was built around year 1653 by the British East India Company.
The Fort St. George has afterwards went through lots of alterations and now days it houses the Secretariat and legislative Assembly. It has a 46 meter high flagstaff in the front side and actually it was mast salvaged from a 17th century shipwreck. This fort was continuously growing day by day.
The Fort also have a museum and it was a building, which housed first Chennai club, Chennai first lighthouse, first commercial bank. It includes collection of things from the British and French East India Companies along with the Raj and Muslim administrations as well. Fort museum timing is from 9 AM to 5 PM and it is closed on Friday.
